Valve caps, stems and the pressure you cannot see
The cheapest part on a car sits on the one system that quietly decides how it stops. What a cap does, what it does not do, and what the federal safety agency actually says about checking pressure.
A valve cap costs less than a cup of coffee and gets less thought than one. It is a lid. It does not hold air, it does not set pressure, and a car will drive perfectly well with all four missing. That is precisely why the part is worth ten minutes of attention: nothing about it announces itself until the day a stem is full of grit, a core is weeping, and a tyre goes down on a motorway slip road.
This guide is about the small parts at the wheel and the system they sit on. It is not a substitute for the manual that came with the car, and where safety is involved it quotes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rather than paraphrasing it.
What a cap actually does
Air is held by the valve core, a small spring-loaded pin threaded into the stem. The cap sits above it and does two jobs. It keeps water, road salt and grit off the core, and it acts as a second seal if the core ever weeps. Neither job is dramatic. Both are the difference between a valve that opens smoothly at the next pressure check and one that has to be forced.
The failure people meet most often is not a leak. It is a cap that will not come off. Aluminium and brass sitting together through a winter of salt spray is a recipe for the two surfaces bonding, and the moment you need the valve is the moment you find out. The fix is a seal inside the cap and a surface that does not corrode into the stem: anodised aluminium rather than bare, or a plastic-lined metal cap where the two metals never actually touch.

The second failure is loss. Caps are removed at a pressure check, put on a wing, and driven away from. A set of four with spares in the glovebox costs less than the petrol used driving to buy one, which is the entire argument for buying them in sets.
Pressure is the job, the cap is the lid
Everything a cap protects exists to keep one number correct. NHTSA puts the priority plainly:
Proper tire pressure is the most important part of maintaining your tires. It affects safety, their durability, and your fuel consumption.

Three things follow from that sentence, and they are worth separating because they fail differently. Safety is about grip and heat: an underinflated tyre runs hotter and flexes more in the sidewall, which is where blowouts start. Durability is about wear: pressure decides which part of the tread carries the load, and a tyre run soft wears its shoulders while a tyre run hard wears its centre. Fuel is about rolling resistance, and it is the smallest of the three effects but the one you pay for weekly.
None of that is visible. A modern tyre can be ten pounds low and look completely normal. The check is a gauge, not a glance.
Cold, and what the word means
Pressure rises as a tyre warms up, and a tyre warms up from driving. Checking after a run gives a number that is real but useless, because the figure on the door label is a cold figure. NHTSA is specific about the interval and about the word:
Check the pressure of all tires, including your spare, at least once a month when the tires are "cold," meaning that the car hasn't been driven for at least three hours.

Two details in that sentence get skipped. The first is the spare, which loses pressure sitting still and is discovered flat at the worst possible moment. The second is the three hours: a car checked at a filling station after a ten minute drive is not cold, and the reading will be a couple of pounds high. The practical answer is a gauge in the car and a check in the morning before anything moves.
Keep a tire pressure gauge in your vehicle. A tire can suddenly lose pressure if you drive over a pothole or bump into a curb when you park.

The light on the dashboard is not a gauge
Tyre pressure monitoring is now standard equipment on essentially every car on an American road:

What the system does is narrower than most drivers assume. It is a warning device with a threshold, not a live readout of whether your tyres are right:
Newer vehicles have Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, but these only activate a warning when a tire is significantly underinflated. You should still conduct a monthly tire pressure check to ensure your tires are always properly inflated.

Read that carefully and the monthly check survives the technology rather than being replaced by it. A tyre can be meaningfully soft, wearing badly and costing fuel for months without ever crossing the threshold that turns the light on. When the light does come on, it is telling you that something is already significantly wrong.
There is a second consequence for the parts at the wheel. Cars with sensors inside the stem use the same standard cap thread as cars without them, so a metal cap fits either. What matters is the seal and the ability to remove it by hand, because a seized cap on a sensor stem turns a two minute job into a workshop visit.
Thread, fit and why universal is honest here
The stem thread on passenger cars has been standard for decades, which is the reason a five dollar set of caps can be sold as universal without any weasel room. This is not the case everywhere in the accessory business, and it is worth stating where a claim of universal fit is genuine and where it is a shrug. On caps it is genuine: the thread is the thread.
Two sizing details still catch people out. Deep-dish alloy wheels can leave a short stem sitting below the rim face, and a long knurled cap becomes hard to reach with cold fingers. Wheel covers with narrow valve cutouts can foul a wide cap. Both are geometry rather than quality, and both are solved by looking at the wheel before ordering rather than after.

What else is happening down there
While the cap is off, the rest of the check takes another minute. Tread depth decides wet grip, and every tyre carries its own gauge moulded into it: the raised bars that sit between the tread blocks. When the tread has worn level with those bars, the tyre is finished. NHTSA suggests pairing that look with the monthly pressure check rather than treating it as a separate event.
Rotation belongs in the same rhythm. Tyres wear unevenly by position, front tyres on most cars carry the steering and much of the braking, and moving them around evens the wear out. The interval belongs to the manufacturer rather than to a rule of thumb, and it lives in the manual.

What actually leaks, in order of likelihood
When a tyre loses air slowly, the cap is almost never the culprit, and knowing the real order saves money at a tyre shop.
The most common slow leak is a puncture that has sealed itself around whatever caused it. That is how a nail in a tread shows up: a tyre that needs air every fortnight rather than a flat. Second is the valve core, which is a mechanical part with a spring and a seal and does eventually weep.
Third is the bead, where the tyre meets the rim: corrosion on an alloy wheel lifts the seal just enough to sigh air out over days. Fourth is the wheel itself, cracked by a pothole in a way that is invisible with the tyre fitted.
A cap contributes to two of those four indirectly. It keeps grit out of the core so the core seals when it closes, and it keeps salt off the stem where the stem meets the rim. Neither is a heroic contribution. Both are the reason the part is fitted at all rather than left off.
The diagnostic that costs nothing is soapy water. Mix washing up liquid with water, brush it over the tread, around the stem and along the rim edge, and watch for bubbles growing rather than popping. It finds a bead leak in a minute that a pressure gauge would take a week to imply.
Cold mornings and the light that appears with the first frost
Air pressure falls as air cools, by roughly a pound per square inch for every ten degrees Fahrenheit the temperature drops. That is why a car that was fine in October sets its warning light off on the first properly cold morning in November without anything having gone wrong. The tyre has not developed a fault. The air in it has contracted.
The correct response is to set the pressure to the door label figure with the tyres cold at the temperature you are actually driving in, rather than adding a few pounds to compensate for something. The wrong response, and a common one, is to check pressures at a warm filling station on a cold day and go home with tyres that read correct hot and are soft the next morning.
Two consequences for the parts at the wheel. Cold stiffens the seal inside a cap, so a cap made from a compound that goes hard will let grit in exactly when the roads are at their saltiest. And a knurled outer surface stops being a nicety when your fingers are cold: a smooth cap that needs pliers in July needs two hands and a swear word in January.
Nitrogen, and whether it is worth the queue
Tyre shops sell nitrogen filling on the argument that nitrogen molecules migrate through rubber more slowly than oxygen and that a nitrogen filled tyre holds pressure longer. The physics is real and the size of the effect is small: ordinary air is already about four fifths nitrogen, so the change is at the margin rather than at the core of the problem.
What matters more is that a tyre filled with anything still has to be checked. If nitrogen persuades a driver that the monthly check is optional, it has made things worse rather than better. NHTSA's guidance is about the interval and the gauge, not about the gas.
What to look at when buying a cap
Four features separate a cap that lasts from one that seizes, and all four are visible in a photograph if you know to look.
- A seal inside. A metal cap screwed onto a metal stem with nothing between them is the version that welds itself on.
- A knurled or ribbed outer surface, deep enough to turn with gloves on.
- An anodised rather than painted finish. Paint chips at the first contact with a valve tool and the chip is where corrosion starts.
- A stated set count. Four is a car. Anything else should say what it is for.
Weight is worth a sentence because it comes up. A set of metal caps adds a few grams at the rim, which is theoretically at the worst place for rotating mass and practically irrelevant on a road car: it is a fraction of the variation between a full and an empty fuel tank.
Trailers, spares and the wheel you forget
Trailers, caravans and utility trailers use the same stem thread as cars, and that is what the twelve piece sets are for. They also live outdoors, often unmoved for months, which is the worst case for both pressure loss and corrosion. A trailer checked once at the start of a season and once in the middle is doing better than most.
The spare deserves its own note because it is the wheel that fails when it is needed. A spare loses pressure sitting still like any other tyre, and space saver spares are usually specified at a much higher pressure than the road wheels, often around sixty pounds per square inch. Check the label on the spare itself rather than assuming it matches the others, and check it on the same monthly rhythm.
A five minute routine that actually gets done
- Do it cold, before the first drive of the day, once a month.
- Take the door label figure, not the number moulded into the tyre sidewall. The sidewall number is a maximum, not a recommendation.
- Check all four and the spare. Write the spare's date somewhere, because nothing else will remind you.
- Look at the tread bars while you are down there.
- Put the caps back on, finger tight. A cap that needs a tool to tighten will need a tool to remove.
That is the whole discipline. It costs five minutes a month and a gauge, and it is the highest return maintenance available on a car that is otherwise serviced by somebody else.
